Getting Out of a Creative Rut

Today, we’re talking creativity. You may or may not consider yourself to be a creative person, but we've got big news for you: if you're a business owner, you're a creative. You had an idea, a talent, a vision- something unique to offer the world- and you brought it to life through your business.

If thats not creative, we don't know what is.

In a perfect world, you'd spend all day tending to the craft that your business is based upon. But let's be real, as a badass service-based business owner, IKYK the colossal pile of “business tasks" outside of that creative zone never really shrinks.

Spending your entire day making business decisions is not only exhausting, but also can stifle your creativity. After all, there's a reason writers and artists hide themselves away in remote cabins to get creative work done. It needs room to breathe, space to move and requires very little distraction.

When you're in the thick of it, it can be hard to find that space... but it's not impossible.

As a business owner, not only do you need your creative prowess to stay in your problem-solving/scaling magic, but you also need it to produce killer marketing that helps sell your magic.

Since we know it'd be crazy to tell you to go hideaway in idyllic town on the coast of Maine to get your creativity flowing, (tempting I know) here's our list of ways to get out of a creative rut and step into your flow again.

4 Ways to Get Out of a Creative Rut

Outsource your creativity.

Ain't no shame in outsourcing parts of your creative process- especially if you're not a professional designer, writer or strategist. Using a template for your pitch decks, project management hubs and emails WILL save you so much time and mental energy. We don't need to reinvent the wheel every week, ladies. Plussss ICYMI: Flodesk just rolled out the ability to share email templates, so if you're interested in that reach out and we could hook you up... 👀

Make a plan.

When it comes to creativity, it really isn't binary. Yes, you'll have your creative bursts of inspo, but sometimes a little structure can go a long way. There are two types of thinking that the brain operates within: divergent and convergent. Divergent thinking is the brainstorming phase, the exciting ideating “big sky” kind of sessions. Convergent thinking is the planning and executing phase, which is just as important and often overlooked. If you're not feeling the spark of new ideas, take the time to plan out what you've got on your plate and clear some energetic space for the creativity to flow back in. Make a game plan.

Keep up with the trends.

Pressed for what to post on social, write about in your weekly newsletter or speak about in your community? Sometimes staying relevant in your biz means tuning into whats hot around you... We love peeking at weekly IG trends on later, diving into news outlets and listening to the popular voices on social. What are people saying about your nice? Sometimes that's all it takes to get a little fire under your a**.

Go touch grass.

We mean this literally. Sometimes the only thing thats gonna do it is walking away from your desk and getting some fresh air. The work will be there when you get back, we promise. A walk in nature, sitting at a park, basking in the sun can all do wonders for your nervous system and creative energy. We find that often times the very ideas you've been chasing will find you.

“Anyhow, the older I get, the less impressed I become with originality. These days, I’m far more moved by authenticity. Attempts at originality can often feel forced and precious, but authenticity has quiet resonance that never fails to stir me.”
— Elizabeth Gilbert

Does that resonate with you? We often feel pressured to constantly innovate or create something “new,” when the reality is that authenticity—your authentic voice, your authentic self—is far more valuable than chasing some brand new big idea. People connect with realness, not perfection. And that’s where your creativity truly shines.

Take a deep breath.

You’ve got magic to share, and the world needs to see it.
